Case Studies

Directions: review the following 6 case studies and identify the program model that each case study represents. Provide a rationale for your answers. You may submit your answers to the facilitator using either the downloadable document or P. 41 in your study guide.

  1. In this high school there is a separate science class for intermediate level LEP students. The teacher is a science teacher who has worked with an ESOL resource teacher to modify his curriculum so that he is sure to cover the most important basics of science, such as the scientific method, principles of experimentation, etc. He also spends more time on language related skills such as how to state a hypothesis, how to state scientific principles in the students' own words, how to write a lab report, and common vocabulary words that have specific scientific meanings: force, power, pressure.

  2. This is a high school English class and students receive English credit. They are studying a novel by Pearl Buck entitled "The Good Deed" and are identifying the plot, setting, characters, etc. Each student reads part of the novel and then shares his/her learning with the other students. All the students are limited English proficient.

  3. This is a high school English class with 25 native English speakers and a few high-intermediate LEP students. The teacher is teaching the writing process. The LEP students work in small groups with the English speaking students who often help them by showing them what the teacher is looking for. The teacher also gives the LEP students extra help with their outside assignments.

  4. This is a third grade class composed of children with many different first languages, all of them learning English through the grade-level curriculum. The teacher uses many hands on activities, pays a lot of attention to the developing students' language and literacy skills, often invites parents into the classroom, and encourages parents to read to their children in their native language.

  5. In this class, half of the subjects (in the morning) are taught in Spanish and the other subjects (in the afternoon) are taught in English. Half of the students speak Spanish and are learning English as a second language and the other half speak English and are learning Spanish as a second language. Parents of both student groups regard this as a "gifted and talented" program which is preparing their children for a multicultural world.

  6. In this fourth grade class, most of the students stay with the teacher all day long, but a few students leave the class every day for a portion of language arts time for instruction in ESOL. The teacher realizes that this instruction is helping some of the students, but she worries that the students have an interruption in their learning environment and also are made to feel different.
