Proficiency in higher order thinking skills (analysis, synthesis, evaluation) and the language used to understand and express complex ideas are required for academic success. One of the easiest ways for content teachers to integrate higher order thinking skills into their lessons is by simply asking follow-up questions. For example, if the class is learning about our solar system and the teacher asks, "What's the coldest planet in our solar system?" and a student answers "Pluto," a simple follow-up question such as, "How do you know?" requires more complex language, as well as more complex thinking.
