Module 1: Assignment Three
Critique "Echolocation" Lesson

Purpose:
To assess the quality of a lesson in terms of the Three Principles

Materials:
Echolocation lesson, Study Guide, p. 20

Instructions:

  1. The last activity in this module is to critique the "Echolocation" lesson found on p. 20 of your study guide in terms of the Three Principles. This lesson was specifically designed for a mainstream classroom containing both native and non-native speakers of English.

  2. Before critiquing the lesson, reflect upon the things we have learned so far in our course about making lessons comprehensible, interactive, and cognitively challenging for ESOL students. One of the easiest ways to make lessons more comprehensible is to "Teach the Text Backwards" by conducting a hands-on activity that introduces key concepts before asking students to read about them. One of the easiest ways to make our lessons more interactive is to utilize cooperative learning activities that cultivate positive interdependence and individual accountability, and one of the easiest ways to integrate higher order thinking skills into our lessons is to ask follow-up questions.  Keep these principles and activities in mind when critiquing the "Echolocation" lesson.

  3. When critiquing the lesson, answer the following questions by referring to the presence or absence of specific activities in the lesson itself:

    A. How well does the lesson address Principle 1 (Increase Comprehensibility)?
    B. How well does the lesson address Principle 2 (Increase Interaction)?
    C. How well does the lesson address Principle 3 (Increase Higher Order Thinking Skills)?
    D. What specific suggestions can you offer for improvement?
    E. Overall, what grade (A, B, C, D, or F) would you assign this lesson and why?

  4. Submit your response to the facilitator.
