Another significant attribute of the characters in The Prairie is their dedication.
This is shown first in Ishmael and his family’s determination to get away from the settlements. After traveling hundreds of miles over rough terrain, Ishmael expresses his determination when he says he will continue west "Until I see reason to stop, or to turn ag'in" (pg 24). Also, the trapper's careful commitment always gets his party out of danger. A pharmacist must also be dedicated; first to obtain his degree and then to carry out his duties correctly, and safely.
