To set up your keyboard to easily type accented letters and special characters, follow these steps:

 1. Close all programs.
 2. Restart your system after shutting down.
 3. Open Control Panel [(a)Double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop display and select Control Panel.  (b)Start - Settings - Control Panel.]
 4. Select Keyboard to change the settings.
 5. Select Language.
 6. Make sure that English (United States) is highlighted. Click on Properties.
 7. Under keyboard layout, select United States-International. (Note that it is currently United States 101.)  You may get an error message here prompting you to load one of the Installation disks.  Go ahead and do so to enable the International Keyboard function.
 8. Restart system after shutting down.

When using the International Keyboard settings, note that some things have shifted around.  Go through all the rows of keys to familiarize yourself with the settings.  Go through a second time while holding down the Shift key.

To type accented letters, simply type ' (apostrophe), followed by the letter.  Be sure to release the apostrophe key before typing the letter.  To type ñ, ~ followed by n.  To type Ñ, type ~ followed by N.  To type ü, type “ (quotation [Shift + apostrophe]), followed by u.  For ¿ and ¡, alt+? and alt+!.

Note that if you want to type a single apostrophe, strike the apostrophe key, followed by the space bar.  This is also true for the dieresis (¨).

SETTING UP YOUR KEYBOARD FOR SPANISH

To set up your keyboard to easily type accented letters and special characters, follow these steps:

 7. You should see an icon (“En” or “Es”) in the task bar area, probably near the clock.  Clicking on this is one way to toggle between the keyboard settings.  You can also use left ALT  + Shift to toggle between the two.
 8. Restart system after shutting down.

When using the Spanish keyboard settings, note that some things have shifted around.  Go through all the rows of keys to familiarize yourself with the settings.  Go through a second time while holding down the Shift key.

To type accented letters, simply type ‘ (apostrophe), followed by the letter.  Be sure to release the apostrophe key before typing the letter.  To type ñ, hit ; (semicolon).  To type Ñ, type : (colon).  To type ü, type “ (quotation [Shift + apostrophe]), followed by u.

Now the fun begins!  What you see on your keyboard is necessarily what you get!  With the keyboard set to Spanish, just start typing from left to right, top row to bottom.  Now go back and do the same thing while engaging the Shift key.  Now you know where everything is!  Note that if you want to type a single apostrophe, strike the apostrophe key, followed by the space bar.  This is also true for the dieresis (¨).

This is what will result once you start typing using the Spanish keyboard settings:

asdfghjklñ´´
zxcvbnm,.-

ª!”·$%&/()=?¿

In almost all PC programs, including word processors, e-mail, and Blackboard, you can hold down the ALT key while typing a numeric code using the numeric key pad in order to type special characters.  Make sure the Num Lock key is engaged.  (It is possible that only one of your ALT keys will work.)

There are two different sets of code.  If one doesn't work, try the other.

TYPING SPECIAL SPANISH CHARACTERS ON A MAC.

It isn't difficult to type accent marks and special characters on the computer.  If you are using Microsoft Word, use the following keystrokes:

á, é, í, ó, ú, Á, É, Í, Ó, Ú:  CTRL + '(apostrophe), the letter
ñ, Ñ:  CTRL + Shift + ~(tilde), n or N
ü, Ü:  CTRL + Shift + :(colon), u or U
¿:  CTRL + ALT + Shift + ?
¡:  CTRL + ALT + Shift + !

{+ means hold down the first key while typing the second.)
(, means release then hit the next key(s).)

For example, to type á, hold the Control key down while typing the apostrophe.  Release these keys before typing a, the letter over which you want an accent mark.

To type Á, hold the Control key down while typing the apostrophe.  Release these keys before typing A [hold down the shift key while typing a], the letter over which you want an accent mark.

If you are using Word 2000, you can run spell check in Spanish.  To set the language, go to Tools>Language>Set Language.  Select one of the Spanish sets.  Now run spell check as you normally would!
