  Are you ready? Today we will be learning sentence structure in German. Then we will learn some nouns so that you can practice making sentences and talking to each other!  
     
 

BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURE

Normal Word Order: the subject is first, then the main verb, and the remaining elements of the sentence

1.) Subject—Verb

Example: Ich schreibe. (I write/am writing.)

2.) Subject—Verb—Direct Object (DO)

Example: Ich schreibe einen Brief. (I write/am writing a letter.)

3.) Subject—Verb—Indirect Object (IO)--DO

Example: Ich schreibe ihm einen Brief. (I write/am writing him a letter.) 

4.) Subject—Modal………Infinitive

Example: Ich will Brief schreiben. (I want to write a letter.)

5.) Subject—Verb—Time—Place

Example: Sie will heute ins Kino gehen. (She wants to go to the movies today.)

Inverted Word Order: an element other than the subject that takes the first place in a clause, usually for style

6.) Time—Verb—Subject—Place

Example: Heute geht er ins Kino. (Today he is going to the movies.)

7.) Prepositional phrase—verb—subject…

Example: Ohne Geld kann ich nicht ins Kino gehen. (Without money, I cannot go to the movies.)
