BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURE
Normal Word Order:
the subject is first, then the main verb, and the remaining elements of the
sentence
|
1.) Subject—Verb
Example: Ich
schreibe. (I write/am writing.)
|
|
2.)
Subject—Verb—Direct Object (DO)
Example: Ich
schreibe einen Brief. (I write/am writing a letter.)
|
|
3.)
Subject—Verb—Indirect Object (IO)--DO
Example:
Ich schreibe ihm einen Brief. (I write/am writing him a letter.)

4.)
Subject—Modal………Infinitive
Example: Ich
will Brief schreiben. (I want to write a letter.)
|

5.)
Subject—Verb—Time—Place
Example: Sie
will heute ins Kino gehen. (She wants to go to the movies today.)
|
Inverted Word Order:
an element other than the subject that takes the first place in a clause,
usually for style
|
6.)
Time—Verb—Subject—Place
Example: Heute
geht er ins Kino. (Today he is going to the movies.)
|

7.)
Prepositional phrase—verb—subject…
Example: Ohne Geld kann ich
nicht ins Kino gehen. (Without money, I cannot go to the movies.)
