Turnitin

Unless otherwise noted in the directions for an assignment, all writing assignments must be submitted electronically through Turnitin.com before the instructor will assign a grade to the work.  In my class, assignments submitted electronically will typically be graded and returned through Turnitin.  When the apple icon next to a submission changes from gray to red, click on the apple to review instructional annotations and the assignment score.

Enroll to use Turnitin.com at <http://www.turnitin.com>.  If you have already registered to use Turnitin for another class, sign in as you normally would.  Select “enroll in a class” on your main “my classes” screen.  Then, enter the class ID and password for the section of the course in which you are enrolled (see chart below).

If you have never used Turnitin.com before, click on “Create Account” in upper right corner to enroll in a class and to create a user profile.  Follow the directions under the section entitled “New students start here.”  Under “Create a New Account,” select “student” to register for my class.  Enter the class ID and enrollment password to register for the course and section in which you are enrolled:

Enter user information correctly.  Be sure to type your name as officially listed with SFC.  Enter an e-mail address that you check frequently.  (Receipts for your work will be sent to this account.)  Create a password (and keep it confidential).  Note that your password will be case sensitive.  It must be 6-12 characters long and contain at least one letter and one number.  Then, choose a secret question and provide the answer (so that your password can be e-mailed to you, should you forget it).  Agree to the terms of the user agreement to create your profile.  Once you submit the information, you should see a link to the class appear on your main “my classes” page.

Make sure that the screen indicates that you’ve joined the course and section you actually attend.  (If you make a mistake, enroll again in the proper section, and send me an email so that I can delete your name from the roster of the other section.)

Are you a visual learner?  Go to <http://www.turnitin.com/resources/multimedia/ training/ turnitin/ student/student_user_profile/student_user_profile.htm> to watch a video that can take you through the enrollment process step by step.

To upload a paper, login to Turnitin, using your e-mail address and the password you created.  (If you have problems with this step and get a message about “cookies,” try clicking the lock icon next to the Login button. Once the icon is in a locked position, try logging in again.)  Click on the class link to enter the class, and then click the “submit” icon for the assignment you want to upload. Choose “file upload” to submit a long document. (Don’t “cut and paste” directly into Turnitin.)  Follow the directions on screen to complete the process.

Be sure to submit your paper in one of the approved formats (such as doc, docx, rtf), or I won’t be able to access it!

Keep in mind: You must click the “submit” button twice before the paper actually uploads.  Make sure that you have uploaded the right paper before you click “submit” the second time.  (Don’t worry if the paper appears to lose formatting when viewed in the initial textbox, which gives an html “snapshot” of your paper.  As long as you upload your document in one of the approved formats, the document will appear in my in-box with just the same format as the document you upload.)

If you’ve uploaded your work correctly, Turnitin.com will acknowledge it immediately on screen and send a digital receipt to your e-mail address.  Check for it!  If you don’t receive a digital receipt, your paper did not upload correctly.

The student is responsible for ensuring that his/her work is properly submitted before deadline.  Deadlines for out-of-class assignments are always at the start of class on the due date, unless otherwise specified.  Uploaded documents will be automatically flagged if they are submitted after the deadline, but some assignments cannot be submitted after the deadline.  Even if you miss class, send your work by the deadline.  Save a copy of your upload receipt, and e-mail a copy of your document to yourself for your records. Computer woes will not excuse a student from meeting deadlines.
