John Draper

His handle name was Cap'n Crunch. He got his name

from the Cap'n Crunch cereal. As a teenager he would

try to have the pay phone return his coin and put

his calls through. His contribution to the hacking

world was, phreaking. He created Phreaking by using

a toy whistle from the boxes of Cap'n Crunch cereal.

What the whistle would do was simulate the 2600

hertz tone that would be used to authorize phone

calls. Used in conjunction with a bluebox it allowed

the user to make free phone calls. There are two

things that are not readily know about John Draper.

First, in August, 1968, he was honorably discharged

from the U.S. Air Force. Second he Wrote the first

word processor program for the IBM PC. By writing

this program he beat Bill Gates out on the bid for

the IBM contract. John Draper is currently the owner

of a security firm. He has also developed a firewall

system called Crunchbox. What it does is halts the

spread of computer viruses.
