Twin Concerto, a double concerto for electric and ëclassicalí guitars, is a work which is concerned with bringing the electric guitar, along with the ëclassicalí guitar, into the European Concerto tradition. The work uses a mixing of styles to create a musical collage. This was accomplished (1) by exploiting the similarities and differences between the ëclassicalí and electric guitars, especially in regards to tone, timbre, technique and style; (2) by using the Lydian and Phrygian modes, both separately and polymodally; and (3) by juxtaposing exotic (Indian and African), American (blues and jazz), and classical styles, especially in regards to rhythm. String orchestra and percussion accompany the guitars. The string orchestra and the marimbas complement the classical guitar because of itís lighter tone, and the toms and cymbals complement the electric guitar because of itís heavier metallic sound. This concerto can be described as a ëbi-modal, polystylistic, multi-cultural collageí for 2 guitars, strings, and percussion. It was presented to the Graduate School of the University of Florida in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music.
