Modal Dance - for Electric Guitar and Tape * Tom Nelly
Tom Nelly, guitar

Modal Dance was created using MAX, ProTools and electric guitar. The composer wanted to create a tape accompaniment for guitar that was both modal and peaceful. The notes for the tape part were randomly selected from preset modes / scales: 1) dorian; 2) lydian; and 3) augmented second scale. Each scale could be transposed by a half-step, up to one octave. Duration of notes was selected in two ways: 1) randomly, between 1 and 12 seconds, and 2) set in milliseconds. The guitar part is an improvisation over the tape accompaniment.
Modal Dance was performed at the 1997 and 1998 University of Florida Electroacoustic Music Festivals and was selected for the 1998 UF SCI Student Chapter CD.
