Sonata for Brass Quintet * Tom Nelly

Sonata for Brass Quintet  is based on a synthetic scale consisting of two conjunct
H-W-W-H pentachords, and uses sonata form as a model. Influences in the piece include jazz, blues, rock, contemporary western art music, and Renaissance points of imitation. The entire piece can be explained, either harmonically, rhythmically, and intervallically by the first measure of the first movement; the material in the entire piece grows from it.  Sonata for Brass Quintet   won best music composition at the 1999-2000 University of Florida College of Fine Arts juried art show.
