Introduction

North America first started out with only the thirteen original British colonies: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. All governed separately, they eventually signed what is known as the Declaration of Independence in 1776, becoming independent and sovereign states, forming what is now the United States of America.

Task

For students in 2nd and 3rd grade to identify, list, and memorize the fifty states of the United States of America.

Resources

TheUS50 - allows users to click on each individual state which will lead to them to a page filled with history and information on the state. It is a great learning tool for audiences of all ages.
50states - provides users links to all fifty states of the United States of America. Each link gives basic information and statistics on the individual state.

Process

1. Visit and explore the web sites listed above.
2. List each of the fifty states.
3. List the capitals of each of the fifty states.
4. Find five interesting facts about each individual state.
5. List all the states in alphabetical order along with their capitals.
6. Trace or draw a map of the United States and color it in.

Evaluation and Rubric

1. The student listed at least forty of the fifty states correctly.
2. The student provided capitals for all of the states they listed.
3. The student found at least three interesting facts about each individual state.
4. The student made a list of their states in the correct alphabetical order.
5. The student presented a colored map of the United States.

Conclusion

After completing your assignment, you should now be able to recall each of the individual states and their capitals. Through the steps provided above, you should also know some additional information about each state and be able to distinguish between them. "Surfing the Net with Kids" is another website that provides students ranging from elementary grades through high school with basic educational needs ranging from mathematics and science to language arts and history; this website provides a list of the fifty states and capitals for memorization. For more facts about the United States, search engines such as google and yahoo are available for you to explore.
