Objects can be categorized into three classes.
Ex 1. The round square Ex 2. Any object whose inside dimensions are larger then outside dimensions Ex 3. Any other object not explained by physics |
The human brain qualifies as object number 1. It has dimensions;1,600 cm³, it has mass; 1.5 kg, it occupies space and time. In this sense it is a normal object. A paradox exists though. Inside the maze of gray matter incased by our skulls lies our mind which knows no laws of physics. It is classic object number 3, it stretches out infinitely in all directions yet occupies no space and no time; it does not exist, it has no home. This the type of object that Heidegger would describe as the “unheimlich.” These objects are the “nothing and nowhere,” they are indescribable, indefinable, and incomprehensible. To define and explore the mind requires “being in” which enters into what Heidegger explains as “…the existential mode of the “note-at-home.” Nothing else is meant by our talk about uncanniness.”
