Exams and Grading:
There will be a mid-term (90-minute) exam in week 9 (10/16-20) during the regular on-line class period, and a two-hour final translation exam during week 16 (12/4-8). The exact times and dates during those weeks may be subject to some adjustment. Any such change will be announced well in advance.
Both tests will be timed, online exams. Timing discourages the temptation to consult translations and dictionaries during the exam. There will be a translation section with some choice allowed. These will be texts that you have read, but may be slightly altered. Different portions and/or questions may appear on different exams. There will also be some parsing for the passages to be translated and questions about background and style. I will also include on each exam an essay portion dealing with the commentary and background reading. I plan to provide a practice translation, some practice vocabulary/parsing and background questions and sample essays before the first exam, so that you can become familiar with the technology and my testing procedures.
In addition to these tests, there will be weekly short quizzes on translation and/or the assigned readings in class; the grades on these will make up part of your class work grade (see below). I will administer a sample quiz during week 2 so that you can become familiar with the procedures. Quizzes will be timed, and may not contain the questions same for all students.
