UF Advice

Smart advice for University of Florida students.

Where to Park & Where to Live at the University of Florida

After researching UF's on campus parking and housing statistics, it's clear why so many undergraduate and graduate students are turning towards living in apartments and houses walking distance to the University:

* UF 2006 enrollment numbers:
50,912 students (according to IPEDs)

* Traditional Dorms: capacity, 2006
7,331

* Married and Family Housing: campacity, 2006
980 apartments

* Total on-campus housing
8,311 (only enough for 16.3% of the student body)

That means that 83% of the student body (42,256 students) turned to off-campus student housing in 2006. A high number of these students turned to off-campus housing near UF-- and after looking at parking numbers, it's clear why they chose to live walking distance to their UF classes:

* Total students living off campus at University of Florida (2006)
42,256

* Number of UF commuter parking spaces on-campus, for those students
3,393 (enough for just 8% of those off-campus students)

Additional parking options include Park-N-Ride, pay-by-the-hour parking lots, and "All Decal" lots, which are either too far away from classes for students to walk, or are not options for the majority of students, due to the requirements for decal eligibility or high cost.

The combination of low on-campus housing options and low number of parking spots for commuter students (living off campus) have together pushed many students to choose apartments, duplexes and rental houses which are walking distance to UF classes. Many private providers of UF Housing are finding that the rentals near campus lease up very early in the year and have significantly higher renewal rates than those located on the other side of the city. After looking at the statistics, it's clear: students should consider rentals near the University.
