Professional Philosophy:

Health is very important as it affects the individual, families, the community, the workplace, the nation and the world. Without healthy people, a country would find it difficult to be prosperous as their employees will not be able to work at their maximum level and in turn the country will suffer financially. Therefore, providing citizens with health education is important for not only the individual but also for the country as a whole.

As health educators, I believe that it is important to approach health education as a multidisciplinary field. We need to not only educate people on how to be healthy, but we also need to teach them the skills necessary to be healthy, lobby policymakers to implement policies that will enable individuals to achieve their optimum health and provide an environment that enables individuals to be healthy. It is only with a combination of these approaches that we can help a nation as a whole to be healthy.

Also as health educators, we must always aim to understand our audience so that we can implement programs that will be beneficial to their development into a healthier community. In understanding our audience, we must understand their cultural values, their health needs and their social needs so that we can better serve them. It is also important that we aim to achieve optimal health because as leaders in our communities, we must “practice what we preach” so that we can set an example for others.

Last but not least, PREVENTION is key and as health educators we have the ability to reach out to a wide scope of individuals in helping to reduce the prevalence and incidence of preventable diseases.

Academic Interests:

My academic interests are centered on prevention. I am interested in heart disease and obesity. These two topics are of great interest to me because heart disease is currently the number one cause of death in the United States. I believe that although genetics play a role in heart disease it is also preventable with proper nutrition and adequate exercise, which brings me to my second area of interest, obesity. Obesity has become a big problem in our country and continues to play a factor in the development of other diseases such as cancer and diabetes.

Three-Year Career Plan:

After graduating from the University of Florida with a Bachelors of Science in Health Education, I will take a year off to complete my prerequisites needed for applying to a Physician Assistant program. I will also use this year off to gain health care experience needed for Physician Assistant school. If I am not accepted into a Physician Assistant program, I will apply to get my Masters in Public Health, specializing in Health Administration.
