SEQUELAE

The most common result of smallpox infection in the patient who survives are the pockmark scars that remain primarily on the face. Blindness can also occur; the WHO reports that smallpox was responsible for a third of all cases of blindness reported in 18th century Europe.

Bilateral joint deformities, especially in the elbows, and mainly in children, also occur in a small percentage of cases.
