Info regarding topic: Spectroscopy

Thanks for coming.

On the following pages find spectra for molecules whose molecular formulae are given. Generally, each molecule will be described by three spectra, one each of infrared(IR), Proton NMR and Carbon 13 NMR.. Use the resources available to you to try to figure out the structural formula for each molecule. These resources include the spectra themselves (obviously) and the various tables and figures found among these pages and chapters 12 and 13 of your Organic Chemistry text which represent, in summary form, the results of hundreds of thousands of man-hours of research accomplished by thousands of scientists from around the world.

We will go over your answers on Tuesday (February 17th), and if I can find any other important sample problems before then I'll add them here.

Don't be too discouraged if you can't get a reasonable answer right away, or even if you can't ever get one for a particular molecule: as far as I know, we have until the Final Exam to work on the skills needed to interpret spectra. However, it would be a good idea to work harder now than later, e.g. the night before the Final. It's called "striking while the iron is hot".

If you want to get a table or a picture,  here's how. Each page that is linked to below contains a single picture which should have dimensions smaller than standard "letter" dimensions (i.e., 8.5" x 11"). Therefore you should be able to print the entire picture to a single piece of paper. Just command your browser to Print the page. Having said that, things don't always work out as you'd planned, especially when publishing content to a web site. You may find it more useful, flexible and legible to save the picture to a file. That way you can open it up in a graphics program and fiddle with it. E.g., you can zoom in on one of the graphs to see the numbers better. The graphics are low quality JPEGs but they are still resolute enough to allow clear viewing of their contained data. To save a picture to a file (on a PC),  just right-click anywhere within the picture and choose the Save As or Save Picture As command. This can also be done on a Mac via its Options or Apple key.
