Sandra Elsen's Statement

I am interested in the Digital Arts and Sciences program as a result of logical compromise between my artistic inclinations and my intelligence and perseverance when it comes to math and science. I graduated from the International Baccalaureate Program in high school, which took a lot of work and time management, and taught me skills I still use. It prepared me for college more than I thought it would. I can manage my classes without much extra effort, and I take responsibility for things I need to get done.

My interest in a combination major in college first started when I created my first website to show and share my art online. I taught myself HTML and CSS and still manage it today. Biology and math always interested me, and I can understand the material without much effort. I'm very interested in how engineering and art can be combined into a major. Any kind of animation fascinates me, and I'll meticulously watch movements and drawing styles and later experiment with them on my own. I've taught myself how to use Photoshop and Painter, and have some experience with Flash and animation. I was inspired to start drawing the human form because of cartoon animation like Disney and many shows from Japan. My interest in animation was the biggest motivating factor to improve my art. My expanding drawing talent and my ability to understand logical sciences are the biggest reasons why I chose to pursue the Digital Arts program rather than a plain Engineering degree. What I want to do with a degree in DIgital Arts is possibly character design or plot creation with some movie production companies such as Disney or Pixar once I learn more about 3D modeling. My thought process and imagination are well suited for such a position.

I lack experience and practice in programming but with time and more classes I plan to improve. I've taken CGS 2414 and am currently taking CIS 3020, so I have a foundation to build on. I am not an abstract person, so I don't create many abstract pieces of work, but I can speculate as to the meaning of such a piece fairly accurately. I am more logical and step-wise in my thinking, which is another advantage I believe for the Engineering side of the Digital Arts and Sciences major. I also lack experience in 3D modeling and software on the computer, which, ironically enough we are learning the week after submission to the program. I do have the ability to think three dimensionally, as I use it even when designing my own characters on paper and in ceramic modeling. My strengths definitely weigh slightly heavier on the art side, but I plan to use this to my advantage. I have an active imagination and have written a novel of sorts with my own characters and art. I hope one day to put such a tale on screen with characters I designed and a story I helped form for the world at large to enjoy.

I hope to learn much more about the connections that can be made between sciences and art, and improve myself and my work as a result. Thank you so much for you time, and I hope there lies promise in my portfolio submission.
