Who?
I’m looking for a biological sciences major or someone who is seriously considering biological sciences for graduate school that wants to learn and assist me on experiments for my PhD dissertation. Also you need to be able to withstand field conditions. Hot humid days, occasional long walks through the forest, and eating local food are some things you will have to experience. Team spirit is a must!
 
When?

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) Field Station in Gamboa, Panamá
 
Costs?
Housing and registration at Smithsonian is included. You will have to pay for your food and your roundtrip ticket to Panama city. Food is not expensive, expect to spend US$70-120 for the whole month.
 
Your tasks?
Help in breeding maintaining Heliconius colonies. Collecting. Assisting in experiments on Heliconius night roosting which involve overnight videotaping, in-cage experiments, video analysis, etc.
 
Other activities you will be exposed to?
Gamboa is an amazing place. It is located off the Panama canal and is surrounded by tropical forests preserves. You will be in a very dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment. Researchers from all around the world work at STRI in all sort of interesting projects. Perfect for networking and broadening your perspective in tropical biology! You will also be able to attend weekly seminars.
