Golden Age of Radio (1925-1935)

CBS NBC ABC

Radio dominated during this era. The stock market crash in 1929 brought upon the crash of vaudeville, and the vaudeville acts became stars on radio. The creation of networks also happened during this time, and they were CBS, NBC, and ABC. As more radios were brought into homes, it changed how people spent their leisure time. Programming appeared and people enjoyed the entertainment like, “Lone Ranger” and “Dragnet”. Soap companies sponsored programs like, “Young and the Restless” as we know now as soap operas. Symphony’s played over the radio and well as a show called “Amos and Andy” which stereotyped African Americans and would be unthinkable today.

Government regulation surfaced during this time through the Federal Communication Act of 1934. This act put all forms of communication under the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) which still exist today. It also appointed 7 commissioners to look over radio broadcasting. The FCC still regulates the broadcasting industry today.
