CHANGING MY HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANY PAID OFF BIG
Listening to the news, it can be a little frightening to hear about the financial crisis that we are in. It is scary to think that things could get worse than during the Great Depression, as we all know that this was a very trying time in our Nation's history. At first I thought I was really taking on a big project, but honestly, it only took me a about a half and hour to find a really great insurance quote. I switched my insurance policy effective for the end of the week, being careful that the policies overlapped so that there was no lapse in my insurance coverage. It only took about 1 hour to find the best quote and switch my insurance policy over and I saved about $500 every 6 months, so I really think that it was worth my time and effort and I am really glad that I looked into this. Recently I have been looking into starting my own business and one of the things that I figured out is really going to cost me a lot of money is advertising. There is nothing more fun than buying gifts, especially my favorite gifts, those adorable little baby gifts. I love to buy all that little cutesy stuff. There are some of the cutest clothes that I have ever seen. And these days there are so many little things that a new mother needs and so many great new inventions like that of the diaper genie which wraps up those dirty little diapers simply and keeps them locked away until they are ready to be thrown out. There are also items like breast pumps, which have become very popular. More recently I think because breast feeding is becoming more popular again, but also because many women have to work and be away from their baby on a regular basis. This is a great way to be able to take care of your baby's needs while you still can come and go to work and school and so forth.
I also love the way that stores let you register now. You just go through and scan everything that you want and if you do this at Walmart, the person can even go online and view your registry and buy something off your list. It is a really great way to get your shopping done fast. There are so many things that you will need if you are expecting your first baby, that it is a good idea to look around in a few places before you register to see what it is you think that you will really need and what things that you can do without. Don't forget to put on the list some parenting books and books about pregnancy and delivery. It is a really good idea to get started on your reading before the baby comes, because after they get here you will more than likely be too busy to read, as all your time as a new parent is spent taking care of that new little precious gift. There is nothing more special in the whole world than becoming a parent. It is one of the greatest blessings there is, so enjoy every minute of it.
Oxford Trip Planning
Planning a trip isn't easy, especially when it is out of the country. My friend Kelly is studying abroad this semester and she is traveling from one place to another which while it is extremely exciting (and I'm so jealous) it is also nerve wrecking making plans in a foreign place. So when she was home over the summer we went online (her parents were there helping) and we looked at all of the different places that she wanted to visit and hotels or hostels she would stay in or views that she wanted to see and so on. First thing we looked up were hotels in Oxford.
We found an Oxford hotel and looked at the websites to see what it was all about. Now a day's most people plan their trips online. From airfare to booking a hotel to seeing what is in the area as activities, all of it can be done on the internet. But at the same time, it can be hard trusting a site about a hotel that is so far away. So we looked at all of the Oxford accommodation offers before choosing one.
The one we found though was so great and seemed like a hotel from home when reading the description of the workout facility and internet connections and breakfast. But other things are listed which make you realize how different some places are from others. You would never see “chocolates and biscuits” listed on the hotel accommodations list for any hotels around here. It is funny to see how different things can be and while you are looking at the website, you almost forget that it is in a foreign place far away, but then a phrase like that brings you back to reality and you see how different customs are.
One thing that I like about hotel websites though is when they list events going on in the area around it or sites that you can go see. While I don't usually go site seeing, it is nice to know where banks are or popular restaurants and bars. Or some of the activities going on in or around that specific town. When you click on this websites events page, it is really detailed and you can tell they put a lot of effort into pleasing their guests, which is obviously something good to know and something that is key in choosing a hotel online.

A PEACE OFFERING OF CHOCOLATES
My boyfriend and I got in a terrible argument last night. He got home from work two hours late and I was upset because I had planned a romantic evening together and I basically accused him of cheating, which I really don't think that he is, but I was just so mad, and I guess I really wasn't thinking. Needless to say, he left in a huff and I hadn't seen him at all today. I know that he is probably really hurt by the things I said to him and the fact that I accused him of cheating on me. I thought about bringing him flowers, but that is a little too girly and I am sure that his friend Don will give him a hard time if I show up there and bring him flowers. Instead I decided to bring him chocolates, but when I went to the store to get them, I couldn't decide whether to get assorted chocolates, or the ones with just peanut butter in them or nuts. Then I saw a dark chocolate assortment which I know that he would definitely prefer over the milk chocolate ones so I picked up a big box of them and an apology card. I was all ready to go up to his door, when I realized that there were quite a few of his buddies cars there in the lot, so I didn't want to make a big scene, that would be embarrassing for both of us. Instead I decided to leave the card and chocolates on the front seat of his car and go home, hoping that he would call me. Now I am sitting around just waiting for the phone to ring and hoping that he will take my peace offering and my apology note and that we can get the whole thing back on track again. I don't know if he will forgive me, and I have been really tempted to call him all day, but I am afraid that he will hang up on me or something and that would just frustrate me and break my heart, so hear I wait for the phone to ring, wondering and waiting if John will ever forgive me for the horrible things I said and the way I treated him. Hopefully the chocolates will warm his heart, as they always say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach...don't they?
SPARRING GEAR CHEAPER ONLINE
Looking online for sparring gear, I realized that I could get much better prices on my equipment online then in any of the store I had been shopping in. There are some really great web sites that have all the latest equipment with some great pictures, it was like being right in the store, except the prices were much better and I didn't have to hear my girlfriend saying are you done yet?
That's right, I am a fighter and like most fighters that I meet, my girlfriend is only moderately supportive of this. I mean she does come to the fights, but she says that my obsession with spending 2 hours a day training in the gym is interfering with our relationship. Fortunately, I talk to a lot of guys who are in the same boat, so next week a friend of mine from the gym is having some people over, and I am bringing my girlfriend along so she can meet some of the other guys girlfriends, this way she doesn't feel so alone in her feelings.
There really is no choice for me, if I want to pursue this as a career then now is the time. Once you get past your prime there is absolutely no way you can have a career in boxing or even in martial arts. You need to be young, as in most sports, and for me this has been a dream of mine for years. I love my girlfriend and I really do want to maintain my relationship with her, but I just wish that she could understand that you only get one shot at doing this, and I can't pass up this chance, not for anyone. I just don't want to wind up hating her later for making me miss my chance to make my dream a reality. I know it sounds strange, but fighting has been my calling and my dream from an early age, and even though she says that beating people up is not a calling, she is wrong, because I know it is my calling.

ZocDoc is something that I just recently found out about. This website enables you to find Brooklyn dentists or just a general dentist in New York. The website is actually pretty cool. You can even sort by dentists that take your dental insurance and it doesn't take long at all. The first thing you do is search for something, for example: Dentist in Queens. Then you can either hit search and it will take you to a list of doctors in your area. This option is really helpful because it searches for your area and then it tells you what insurance providers that dentist accepts and also the appointment dates that are open for the next few days and upcoming weeks. You can actually make the appointment online which is really nice. Two other options are to search for a dentist by the date which brings up all of the dentists with open appointments on that date no matter which insurance plan you have (this would be good probably if you have a wide insurance plan or if you are planning to pay out of pocket). This is also a plus if you have an emergency or just need to get into any dentist immediately. I remember last year I got hit in the face and needed a dentist on Father's Day and my dentist was in Florida with his kids. We had to call every single person we knew in order to get an appointment that day.
You can also search by the specific insurance plan that you have. That way you can find a dentist you like in any area rather than the ones that are just by you. Many people are willing to go further to go to a dentist they respect and have a connection with or one that was referred by a family member or a friend if they are in their insurance plan. So knowing your provider you can search that way and get a broader list.
All in all this website is fantastic. There really are no downsides to ZocDoc. It enables you to look at your convenience and book appointments on your own time. The best part of it is that you can schedule this appointment or look into the different dentist offices whenever you can. You can go online at 3 in the morning if that's what your schedule permits. No more talking to a receptionist during office hours only.
Computer Geeks
I have always wondered if people are just born with knowledge of computers or the ability to hold knowledge of them better than others. Some of my friends know so much about computers. They rattle off words like dedicated server or megabyte and expect me to know them (to be honest when I just wrote megabyte I spelled it bite, which shows how much I really know about computers). To me though, they have always been foreign. Maybe it is because I went to a private school and we only had computer class once a week and basically all we did was draw and learn how to use WORD (or whatever version of word was available when I was in 6th grade). Other schools (probably public ones) had computer classes everyday or a few times a week at least. I think this may be a big reason why I am behind in technology or maybe why I have never really gotten interested in it. Even though my family was one of the first ones out of the people I knew to get a computer and to get internet. I remember my friends would always come to my house and think that I was so cool and they would play around on my computer but after a few weeks I got bored of it and only went to chat with friends online. I never really got into how it was made or any other aspect on it besides communication.
I do however know a little about dedicated servers which I learned about in computer science and then again in my econ class (for some reason). All of the jumble about hosting partners and servers and guarantees really confuses me and makes me wonder if I am the only one that gets confused or if other people out there are like me. Sometimes I feel like websites should have a cliff notes version where we could read and get the gist of it better. Or maybe I should take another computer science class (even though I thought the first one was torture). Or maybe they make a dictionary for people who don't understand computer terms and I could get one of those. No matter the situation I really need to up my game when it comes to computers if I ever want to get anywhere in life.
Make yourself Stand Out
I spent all of high school being coached by teachers, counselors and parents about the future. They tried so hard to prepare us for what was going to happen that I felt when I got to college I had already been there for years. One thing though that will always be in my mind is that you always have to make yourself stand out. When we were applying to colleges (and preparing too starting in 8th grade) we learned that a lot of people have great GPA's and play sports, but you need to set yourself apart and show how you are unique and different and what you can give to that school. So we all set out to go above and beyond. We joined clubs and played sports and volunteered. We were so involved with everything but we actually really did enjoy it. So when it came to filling out applications we all were ready and felt confident.
But something I learned through that process was that it doesn't stop there. After high school and getting into college you need to excel in college and stand out so you and get a job and then once you get a job you need to excel and stand out so you can move up in your company or get to where you want to be.
While sports and extracurricular are great in high school, you need other things to set you apart in the real world. Something that will help you stand out is a certification, like Microsoft Certification Training. Since technology is absolutely necessary today in the workplace it is a great thing to get ahead and show that you are certified and know what you are doing and are qualified for the job. This training can help you get there by teaching you and making you more knowledgeable and familiar with cutting edge technology and computers.
It is funny how you when are in high school you think that you only have to make it until graduation and then everything will be different. Then you get to college and you realize it's just like high school but with more freedom and you think you just need to make it until graduation. Then you graduate and get to the real world and you are still competing and studying to do better and pushing yourself. It really does never stop.
Promotional Products for Students
I have yet to meet a college student that refused a free gift. I think we are all trying to find a way to get a freebie out of someone, so when a company is looking for a place to hand out promotional products, their best bet is near a college campus in my mind. It isn't just a waste for the business though. I feel like some companies would think that sure college kids want free stuff, but would they keep coming back to but my product afterwards? The answer is yes! We remember who did us a good dead and handed out free promotional umbrellas a few days before the rain. To this day I still remember my freshman year when I was running to class to take my test and I forgot a pencil. I was running back to my dorm when I saw a booth across the street handing out t-shirts, water bottles and pencils. Thankfully I got to my test on time and a few weeks later, I opened a checking account at the bank that gave me that test saving pencil. And my pencil, checking account and I have been happy ever since.
But seriously, It may seem like college kids really aren't getting it and that they are only out for free stuff (which is half true, we love a good deal). But we're not only out for free promotional products; we want the businesses that offer those promotions for us. As young adults, we are just starting to be out on our own and we feel like sometimes people kind of don't take us seriously. When we see ad's and companies targeting us, it really does make us pay attention because we feel important and included.
It's kind of like the current election. A lot of campaigning is towards my age group (18-25) and the more attention we are getting, the more involved in the issues we are and the more we pay attention. The same goes for businesses. The businesses that are seeking us out individually are the ones that we are responding too and telling our friends about. Surprisingly we don't just go up to a friend and say I got a free pencil; we say I got a pencil from this business, which typically starts conversations. We really do like to gossip at this age, but the gossip isn't always petty, it's important too.
