Homeschooling | Home Schooling Planning Your High School Home School Program

The greatest advantage of homeschooling is the freedom to choose and design your own curriculum as per the wishes and needs of the family. There may be various reasons why you may choose to home school your child. The key is to make sure that the student is not disadvantaged by studying at home. While most states have certain guidelines or set home school program, there is still enough flexibility and your choices can be accommodated. The following guidelines can help you in formulating your very own home school program for your child:
Research your state requirements for a High School Diploma- The least qualification should be an essential goal of homeschooling. It is always better to have an official validation for all the hard work that you have put in over the years. Don’t lose out on this very important certificate just because you left out a course.
Stick to subjects and courses that are normally taught in high school- This is extremely important if your child is planning to study further in college. Even otherwise it is necessary to include subjects like English, maths- algebra, geometry, sciences, and social studies and so on. These courses carry certain credit points that are helpful in college admissions.
Plan your child’s future – It always helps to decide on the field the student wishes to take up, post high school as this helps to decide the course for study. For instance, take up biology if your child wants to do something in the field of life sciences.
Familiarize yourself with college admissions and the array of standardized tests- You should know before hand the tests required to be taken to get admitted to the college of your child’s choice. Study material and tests are available online. The choice of courses also adds credits to these tests.
Include electives like music or carpentry and so on- Besides giving an edge in vocational training, the student can pursue his individual interests and perhaps discover new talents and passions. Heavy Equipment Careers for instance are become popular amongst high school graduates. The U.S. department of labor and statistics has an online occupational outlook handbook on Construction Equipment Operators which can be useful if considering a career in this field.

As you are dealing with a teenager who has a mind of his own, make sure that you consider his input too. Also it is extremely important to take your child’s capabilities in consideration. You will definitely not want to burden your child with goals too high or undervalue a student who is capable of doing more. Make sure to include physical education too, for holistic development of the mind and body. Joining a home school parents group lets you know what other parents are planning and helps you plan your Program better.

Homeschooling is your way of teaching your child what you think is best for him. It thus becomes your responsibility to make sure that he is not disadvantaged at any level than a student attending regular high school. Do not skip a course just because you are not comfortable teaching it. Help is available online and from certain communities that help with tutoring the student. Always remember that the education you impart to your child is going to help him build his life. So choose the Program with care and rational thinking.

Fun Hair Replacement Story

Monday, March 31, 2008 12:38 PM, Taylor Paige

At Thanksgiving he did not have hair. Now at Easter dinner he does. It was strange seeing him, because he was not completely bald, just a strong receding hairline. But now his hair is much thicker looking on top, he really looks younger. He is 38 years old and now looks about 32. When he walked in, it was like daytime soaps when they get a new actor, and everyone just acts like nothing happened (oh, it's the new Jack Deveraux, no problem), but it's a completely different person! Or like Darren on Bewitched. So that was my uncle Jack, with all of us just chatting, trying not to stare, and not saying a word about his new hair. That elephant in the room. I wanted to compliment him. I wanted to know what hair treatment program he used. I could tell it was not a toupee, his new hair looked natural. I thought it had to be some sort of hair replacement treatment, but how does that work? Is it laser therapy? Hair implants? Do they insert artificial hair strand by strand? or did he take hair regrowth drugs? And did they have side effects? Hair loss runs in our family, so I was more curious than most.

I personally cannot stand skirting around an issue, and so after about 30 minutes, I broke the ice and just complimented him. Boy did that make everyone, including him, more comfortable. I mean really, we complimented my cousin when she lost 40 pounds and we went on and on about it how great she looked, why not compliment Jack? He was probably excited. And yes, he was!

So it turns out he did a fairly intensive hair replacement therapy, in combination with a hair loss drug that helps hair regrowth, and a scalp and follicle treatment program. I always thought those commercials were too good to be true, but Jack is really looking fantastic. He said the combination of the 3 treatment programs was key, which makes sense, but that is quite a commitment. I could not bring myself to ask how much it cost him, some subjects are taboo even for someone outgoing like me. He would have offered if he wanted to share.

With the baldness gene in my family, this is something I will have to deal with I'm sure. And no matter how often women tell me they do not care about hair loss in men, women like good-looking guys. And Jack is just better looking now.

movie auditions

Monday, March 31, 2008 10:39 AM, Taylor Paige

I just read a statistic that 84 percent of people say they aren't in their dream jobs. That is a really sad statement. Being that in America we spend about ½ our lives working and at work. Doesn't that really say that we are all just miserable? No wonder so many of us are on anti-depressants. I guess we have to do that just to stomach whatever it is we are doing for a living.

As for me, the truth is I am not pursuing my dream either. I am in school for accounting, but my real dream is to be an actress. I guess knowing that so many people fail in that industry, I have just decided to take the more safe and secure road. I just don't take failure too well. I think that the constant rejection would probably kill me. I guess I could go on a few casting calls and see how it goes. I just don't want to be one of those people who gets to the end of their life with a lot of what ifs. If I am going to try this, it is probably best to do it now, the older you get, I am sure the more difficult it gets. I don't want to go to a modeling agency or do modeling auditions or anything like that. I think that modeling jobs are only for the super beautiful, super skinny people and seem really superficial to me.

I want to go for movie auditions, film auditions, TV auditions, or even play auditions. I want to act. I have done a little acting in high school and in a few little local productions, and I have really enjoyed it. I am an actress in my heart, but I don't think I have that star quality that people look for. I am pretty average. I don't want to like just have my hands in a commercial somewhere, I mean it pays money I'm sure, but it is not really acting. I could move to NY or LA or somewhere better than here to get discovered. It seems a bit risky, but I am starting to be afraid of just being stuck in a room somewhere running numbers for the rest of my life. I want more, much more. I don't want to have to stay drugged up forever from the stress of not living my life. I want to live in the moment…NOW!

modeling jobs

Friday, March 28, 2008 8:05 PM, Taylor Paige

I always wanted to be a model or an actor. Not only do I love to watch movies and read magazines, I know every detail and every secret of the latest stars. Just the other day, I drove by the mall where my friends and I always hang out and saw an advertisement for open calls. Now I did not know whether these were for acting jobs or modeling jobs, but I was certain that I had to be there. After all, they might miss the chance to see the next modeling star or film heartthrob, and I could not possibly deprive them of that opportunity. I told all my friends, my mom and dad, and even my little brother that this was the last time they would see me as another normal, boring, face in the crowd. I may have never been inside a magazine, but I know that I was born for modeling. When I finally got to the mall, the open call turned out to be for an upcoming TV series about a teen who was transported back in time to the Civil War era and had to find a way back to the future. I had never done acting auditions before, and frankly, my face is better cut out for modeling jobs, but I mustered up the courage to face them nonetheless. I think the hardest part about open calls is the constant comparison that goes on as you wait in tacky reception area for your name to be called. My mom and I went up to the haggard assistant and wrote down my name and bio information on the pad, under dozens of other pages that were filled with other eager teens. After that, the wait began. Immediately I started to scan the room. There were some kids there that clearly signed up for the acting auditions on a whim. Others were forced to try out by their overbearing parents and were squirming uncomfortably as their parents gave them hollow assurances and last minute advice about how to execute the perfect sob. And still others seemed the least fit for any acting jobs whatsoever. I dismissed them one by one in my head, wishing that I could tell the casting agent ahead of time not to waste her time and to just see my performance first. Finally, it was my turn for film auditions, and guess what happened?

Web design

Friday, March 28, 2008 3:12 PM, Taylor Paige

As I prepare to leave the student organization that I founded and ran for several years in other, younger (and quite capable) hands, I'm trying to think about any last actions I can take to make things smoother and better for the organization. An area that I think we're unfortunately lacking in is our web site. Lots of college students are quite advanced at web design and I have seen tons of undergrad organization web sites that are quirky, fun, functional, and/or simply stunning.

Our web site, however, is one I designed myself, and I don't know, really, anything about the whole. I mean, it looks all right, but it could be a lot snazzier, and have fancier things on it (both practically and impractically).

So doing a bit of surfing around to find out where the organization should take its site from here - what suggestions I can give, and so on - I happened across the fact that Dubai web sites actually are quite up to date with current trends of design and things. Web design dubai style is some of the cleanest and most functional I have seen. The search engine optimization dubai has worked out is incredibly precise. Web hosting dubai does is reasonably priced and seems easy to figure out, compared to some other web hosting companies.

And software development dubai style seems to produce software nearly as user-friendly and uncrashable as Mac software. So it's setting a solid example for the organization to look at.

Of course, what we really need to do is find a web designer or a webmaster: someone to implement all of the cool ideas and make them actually work. We have to have a way for people to sign up for our events, and it would be great if that could be done through the web site, so that nobody has to enter them into a spreadsheet, so that they can't forget their phone number (because they can't submit the form without it!), and so on. I know web whizzes are out there on this campus somewhere, but where does one find them? They are not lurking somewhere around the theatre crowd, that's for sure - and if they're really good, they're probably already worth some money. So not much chance of us nabbing them.

Laptop

Friday, March 28, 2008 2:54 PM, Taylor Paige

Technology has made some incredible advancements just in my life time. It is difficult to understand how they have been able to move so quickly in this area. It must be stuff that they have had in the works for a long time. I think it is good, but I wonder how it will effect future generations. Will they become lazier and more obese as they spend more and more time online and less and less time in the "real" world? Surely, there will be ramifications for all these new inventions. And what other things lie on the horizon.

I use my laptop often, and most of the people here have one. It has almost become a "don't send your kid away to college without one" type item. Kind of a necessity like bed linens or a notebook or something. Many people also have a PDA that they have with them all the time and almost everyone has a cell phone. I mean to be sent away to school without a cell phone would be a form of neglect or abuse or something along those lines. Most cell phones have cameras in them, which is cool, but I sometimes wonder who is taking pictures in places that they shouldn't like in bathrooms, locker rooms, showers, and even in the bedroom. It makes me a little nervous to think that people could be filming anything without your knowledge. I am not paranoid, but when I think about it, or see pictures of things that people have taken with their cell phones online, it does make me think.

My friend just got a great deal on an Asus notebook. She bought it online and she downloads all the pictures from her phone into it. Now granted she doesn't take obscene pictures, but still I know she has put pictures up of people who have no idea that she has even taken their picture, much less that there are pictures of them now up on the internet. That could be any of us. Think about how many places you go that people could be taking your picture and putting it up online, and you would have no idea. They could put some sleazy comment for it and you just would never have a clue. It's all kind of freaky, the idea that you could be plastered all over the web and never know it.

Oolong tea

Thursday, March 27, 2008 3:53 PM, Taylor Paige

I just discovered a new tea, it is called oolong tea. I know this is a strange name, but it is great. It is used for slimming and weight loss, and has the taste of green tea, but not so bitter. I really like it, and am using it as part of my diet and exercise program. I think it is helping. I have lost 10 pounds in the past 3 weeks, so I am pretty happy with it and it's really good. I have always been a tea drinker. I like chamomile tea, it is very relaxing and I like to drink it at night before I go to sleep. I have always found green tea and black tea a little too bitter, but raspberry tea is great too. I like lots of the herbal tea and try to keep a few flavors for remedies around as well. I love a good trip to the health food store, to pick up a little of this and that. Some of the flavors are just staples in my life, but I usually try to pick up a new one when I go.

My roommate Jen has just found a place to get wholesale tea and we are going to check it out. I love to get a deal, but I am concerned that it won't be as flavorful as the ones I get at my health food store. I will give it a try though since I am drinking it all the time. I have also been told about foodservice iced tea and foodservice tea. I did try some foodservice ice tea once, and it was pretty good, but I am really more of a hot tea drinker. Iced tea is great in the middle of summer, but other than that I find hot tea to be much more soothing to the soul.

There are major health benefits to drinking lots of tea. I have heard that you should try and drink several cups a day and that it helps reduce your chances of heart disease, stroke and even cancer. Maybe, that is just because a cup of tea is relaxing and really needs to be sipped and not guzzled like a cup of coffee. I am not sure of the reasons for the health benefits, but I am glad that research supports that I should keep drinking my tea.

online backgammon

Wednesday, March 26, 2008 3:21 PM, Taylor Paige

Backgammon is one of the few games in this country that seems to be underrated. I do believe that most people think it is too complicated a game, however, for those who know the rules it is a very enjoyable past time. Let me explain the game.

Backgammon has a unique board, which has four tables with 6 points in each. Each player has their own unique colored checkers 15 each, for a total of 30 in the game of backgammon. Each players rolls the dice (2) and moves their checkers to their home and then progressively off the board. The goal of the game is to get all your checkers off the board, before your opponent does to win the game. The term for this is bearing off. Checkers are moved back and forth across the board in a sort of u shape configuration and each checker can only be move into a vacant space. In backgammon, a vacant space is one that is either empty, has only your checkers in it, or has only one of the opponent's checkers in that space (a blot). Once the dice are rolled, if you roll a 3 and a 4 for a total of 7 let's say, then you can choose to move one checker 7 spaces, or you can choose to move one checker 3 and a different one 4 spaces. If however, you roll doubles then you get an extra bonus, let's say you roll snake eyes, for the sake of simplicity. Now, you can either move one checker 4 spaces, 2 checkers 2 spaces, or 4 checkers one space each. There is a belief that the luck of rolling doubles a lot in the game of backgammon will allow you the win, since rolling doubles provides you with a lot of flexibility in moving your pieces to vacant spots.

A player must first get all fifteen of their checkers onto their six home board points, and then they can begin the process of removing them with their rolls to eventually win the game. Bearing off is done when all the checkers are in the players home, then based on the dice rolls, the numbers that are rolled are the points at which the checkers are removed from. If there are no checkers on the points of the numbers rolled then one from a higher point must be moved down and off the board.

Playing online backgammon can be a very rewarding experience. Hopefully, newcomers will find this simple breakdown of the rules and give it a try.

italy

Sunday, March 23, 2008 8:35 PM, Taylor Paige

This week as part of my internship I have been looking at the international real estate market. My assignment has been to look at each region of the world and look at one or two countries specifically. What I am researching is the ins and outs of each country's real estate market and then to summarize them in relation to the current and historical american market. This past week I have been looking in to the Mediterranean region and I chose Italy and Sardinia as my two countries. Since they are relatively close and free democratic nations, I expected them to be extremely similar in both price and stability of the market. I wanted to do a good balance or research so I first looked at Sardinia apartments and Italy apartments, then I followed up by checking my findings in the Sardinia villas and Italy villas markets. My findings from the apartments markets were extremely similar to the findings in the villa markets. I was a bit wrong in my assumptions because Italy had many cheaper places that I found in Sardinia. I have done five of these reports so far and have found them to be quite helpful because they will surely aid me in my search for both employment abroad and to asses situations within our own country. Other than that this part of the semester has been pretty boring. All of my other classes are just basically lecture and exam courses with almost no student to teacher engagement. Thankfully I will be finished in less than a year and I can actually go out in to the world and use this stuff for once. I plan on working internationally now that I have had this experience because I just really want to go out and see the world while I work. I mean I have never been outside of the country and just need some time to be free, or something like that. Maybe I will try Australia next, I have always liked to surf and have never really gone to any of the good surfing beaches. I know they have amazing surfing there. That's where I'll have to do my next research write-up for.

Sicily apartments

Friday, March 21, 2008 10:52 AM, Taylor Paige

A recent European vacation taken with friends turned out to be somewhat disappointing. A local travel agent assisted us with our plans and recommended a specific agenda to meet our requirements. Our plans were made well in advance and we spent much time anticipating this wonderful trip. We frequently got together with our friends for dinner and spent the evenings discussing our trip and the wonderful places we were going to visit. We were rapidly approaching the day of our departure and everyone was extremely excited that it was finally time to take off on our trip.

We drove together to the airport in our car and allowed extra time for the trip in case of traffic problems. We decided we would have a nice leisurely breakfast at the airport restaurant before takeoff. As we were enjoying our breakfast, the airline made an announcement about a delay in our flight. This was very upsetting as we had planned everything so far in advance. Standing around the airport trying to obtain departure information was not how we hoped to spend our morning. There were more announcements, all resulting in further delays as supposedly they had mechanical difficulties with the plane we were scheduled to board. Yes, we were still waiting for our flight at lunch time so we got to share another meal at the airport. Finally, at 2pm an announcement was made that our plane would be ready for boarding shortly. We were very relieved to hear this news but the day had become very stressful and was not the way we had hoped to begin this vacation.

We flew to Paris and very much enjoyed the flight. We had made arrangements to be picked-up at the airport by a hotel limousine. Of course, our arrival was much later than we had anticipated so the first day was not a good omen.

When we arrived at our hotel, they did not have rooms available for us. We had confirmations of our reservations but the rooms were still not available. There had been a glitch in their system and it must have resulted in canceling our reservations. The hotel made arrangements for us to go to another hotel and provided us with free transportation but we were tired and upset by this additional change in our plans. Our original hotel did apologize many times and provided some financial compensation for our inconvenience. Still, it was not the start of a fun trip we had in mind.

The rest of the time in Paris was very enjoyable and we looked forward to putting the rocky start of our vacation behind us.

Several days later we left for Tuscany. Our plans included rental of a Tuscany villas for one week and then relocating to a Tuscany apartments for the second week. We chose to make the same arrangements for our two weeks in Sicily. We planned to spend our first week in Sicily at a Sicily apartments and relocate for our second week to Sicily villas. We hoped that these lodging changes would enable us to better experience what life in Tuscany and Sicily is like. We wanted to meet the people who live there and learn about their culture and heritage. We were very pleased we made these decisions as we thoroughly enjoyed our stays in Sicily and Tuscany. It was definitely the best part of our vacation and enabled us to return home with fond memories and not dwell on the problems at the beginning of the trip.

Bill Consolidation

Tuesday, March 18, 2008 4:06 PM, Taylor Paige

A friend of mine is a single mother who has had a tough time meeting her financial obligations. She has three children and an ex-husband who often misses his child support payments. How do you pay your bills when your income is not sufficient to cover them? Yes, she can take him to court but that is a very drawn-out process and costs a small fortune in legal fees. She has found it necessary to file for bankruptcy but has overcome that obstacle and now owns her own home and is very proud of everything she has accomplished. She still, however, has debts that she is obligated to pay and does not always know how she will manage. She recently consulted a financial advisor and was told to consolidate these debts so that she could pay them off quicker and at a much lower interest rate. Her advisor said debt consolidation was the answer to her problems and helped her find the right vehicle to complete this goal. She has opened up a new account with a lower interest rate for a short term, is working on bill consolidation and planning to pay off all of her current debts through this new account for debt consolidation. She will make all of the necessary payments to clear up her old debt and then begin to pay off the debt at the new lower rate. The secret to this process is to be sure you do not use the paid off accounts for any future payoffs. I have read about people who freeze their credit cards in ice so that it will take them at least a day to defrost them. This provides them with plenty of time to decide if this new purchase is really worthwhile as it will put them back into the debt that they are trying to escape. Most decide that it is not and return their credit cards to the freezer. This is a good move on their part as very little is really worth putting you back into debt when you are working so hard to become debt-free.

It is a wonderful accomplishment if you can become free of debt. You will feel as though the weight of the world has been lifted off of your shoulders. What could be more exhilarating? You are debt free and loving every minute of it. Enjoy this milestone once you have reached it. Many have tried but only a few have succeeded.

New Dog Beds

Sunday, March 16, 2008 8:36 PM, Taylor Paige

My roommate loves dogs. Sometimes I think he loves dogs more than he loves people. He is in the habit of saying that he misses being with his ex, not because he misses his ex, but because he misses his ex's dog. When we pass a dog on the street - regardless of what breed or size: big, small, scary, friendly, pretty, ugly, purebred, mutt, retriever, spaniel, skinny dog, fat dog, old dog, puppy, whatever - he has to pause to pet it, or at the very least cast longing glances as it passes. "Can we get a puppy? Please?" he begs me. The begging is mostly in jest, because he knows that we can't have pets in our apartment, that there is no room for a dog, and, most importantly, that neither he nor I nor any of our roommates have time to care properly for a dog: walk it, feed it, give it love and attention. We're busy, broke college students with barely enough time to look after ourselves. Owning a dog would be disastrous.

Still, sometimes it's really difficult for him to resist. Plus, he has the added curse of being really approachable, and so people with dogs approach him, or dogs approach him, and he falls in love with the dogs, and then he wants a dog.

And then he gets approached with stranger requests and for odder purposes. He's just an approachable guy. Strangers feel comfortable coming up to him. So one day he was sitting in the park and a man came up to him. "Do you like dogs?"

My roommate was taken aback, but he always likes to talk about dogs, and he's friendly anyway. "Yeah, I do," he said.

The man said, "I thought you looked like a dog person! I'll bet your dog needs a dog bed."

"Um," said my roommate, but the man cut him off, whipping out a catalog, shiny, from his pocket. "Don't say it," the man said, "his old dog bed won't do for much longer. You need to replace them faster than you think. Besides, we've got the newest technology in dog bed durability and cleanability. We're the dog bed provider that professionals use: kennel owners, dog walkers, you name it...Just take a look, your little Rover won't regret it."

And so my roommate paged longingly through glossy photographs of shepherds, poodles, dachshunds, terriers, and more snuggling adorably in a myriad of dog beds: dog beds of all shapes and sizes, of "increased durability!" and dog beds that were "so easy to clean!" Later that day, when he came home, the first words out of his mouth were, "Can we get a puppy? Please?"

Flying High In Europe

Thursday, March 13, 2008 11:38 PM, Taylor Paige

What’s better than traveling? Being able to travel for cheap! I’ve been looking online for student flights and damn, we’ve got a lot of options. There are a ton of sites promoting cheap domestic flights, cheap international flights, and student flights as well! I think that this is as good a time as any to get out of the country, ha-ha. I’ve been looking very closely at flights to Europe – it’s been a life-long dream to travel there. Something about it seems so intriguing. I think it’s mostly the huge concentration of countries and cultures so close together that makes you wonder just how much you can take. As someone who enjoys cooking and food, Italy and France are my two “must visit” countries. I’d love to pick up some recipes and cookware from there, especially some copper cookware. I’d also like to try and visit South America. The culture there is really fun and laid back, and I love soccer, so it works, ha-ha. I can only guess that the food is amazing. I’ve been trying a lot of Bolivian food lately and love it. Brazil, yeah. I have to go there to play soccer with them. Futsal, here I go! I’d like to visit Asia too. The street vendors are supposed to be so great that I just really owe it to myself to see if the hype is for real. I’m going to guess that it is ha-ha. I don’t know if I could stand the heat of the Southeast Asian countries, though, so I might just stick to China. Maybe I’ll even have time to visit Korea. I haven’t gone since middle school, and I would love to go back. If I could find a few cheap flights there and back, I’d definitely go. I had my first kiss there! Well, first make out session, really. Yeah… in middle school, too. Oh man. So many countries to visit with so many girls in each one! So many different types of food to try! If only I could live forever! Any of you want to go travel with me? It’ll be fun!

VoIP is so Sweet

Wednesday, March 12, 2008 9:26 PM, Taylor Paige

One thing that makes me think is that what happens if a person has already installed IP telephony onto his or her computer, and then the computer breaks down. That means that if the person has gotten rid of the “back-up” – a regular landline or cellphone – he or she is totally doomed because once the computer broke down, he or she is not able to make or receive calls to anyone or from anyone. Obviously, the benefits of softphones are great, since they have a much higher degree of sound quality, security, etc, etc. But that actual reason that a softphone is called a softphone is that voice over IP actually depends on the computer software to be able to function correctly. And if the software is not there or damaged, then the softphone is doomed? I guess that these pbx phone systems are just much more suitable for businesses that have the regular phone lines anyways. Business telephone systems need a much higher resolution – i.e., ability to let through many more calls than regular house lines and also need that extra VoIP security that does not come with the regular land line that can be tapped or simply damaged by adverse weather conditions. Another objection to the VoIP systems might be that a virus that gets into the computer somehow can damage the softphone and mess with the contacts in that phone and so forth. I honestly do not know anything about that, but I believe that there has to be a certain protective system embedded in these softphones that protects them from computer viruses. It just seems strange that it is not a very popular concept in the world yet, but the popularity of the pbx phone systems is increasing. There are currently several companies on the softphone market, including Unified Communications, that offer more and more variety and high quality of these reliable and secure business communication systems. I hope that this technology will gain more and more popularity in the future, since it seems that these VoIP systems are exactly what most professional businesses would want!
