Mount Potts Station, Rangitata Valley: Edoras

-The plains of Rohan are situated in the large mountain valley of Erewhon, a treeless land surrounded by shingle-sloped alpine peaks

-Edoras, the capital city of Rohan, was situated on Mount Sunday, seen above. The site was dismantled once filming was complete

-The Rangitata River is located deep within the Southern Alps. It is fed by mountain tributaries amd forms a shingle fan with an associated large

valley

-Ancient glaciers have created rocky outcrops throughout the valley, one of which is Mount Sunday

-When descending into the valley, Mount Sunday can be seen straight ahead. There is no access to the mountain and the best views are available

on the road

leading to the entrance to Mount Potts Station

-Edoras took eleven months to complete and was one of the most elaborate sites constructed for the films

-Mount Potts is a high country station and stretches from an altitude of 500 meters to 2300 meters.

-About 70% of Mount Potts is summer hill country and home a large number of New Zealand's sheep population
