Syllabus

Course description and goal

This course is the second in the University of Florida's three-part Latin sequence. As we cover chapters 15-27 in Wheelock's Latin, we will master simple morphology (case endings and verb conjugations) and move on to the syntax of more complex sentence constructions. Important ones include indirect speech, participles, and the ablative absolute. An emphasis on vocabulary building will increase our working vocabulary. Along the way, students will also be introduced to a thing or two about Romanitas: culture, society, art, etc.

Texts

Because a student's mastery of vocabulary determines in large part their success in the course, I also strongly recommend Vocabulary Cards and Grammatical Forms Summary for Wheelock's Latin (ISBN 0865165572). It can be ordered from amazon.com etc., or from the publisher, Bolchazy-Carducci. Some students may prefer to make their own index cards—but all students will benefit from concerted vocabulary study.
