Course objectives:  The title ³Survey Portuguese Literature² given on the UF schedule on line is provided by the state bureaucracy, not by the professor.  The actual name of the class, as written above, is meant to designate literature written in the Portuguese language, whether from Portugal, Brazil, or Lusophone Africa (or even Lusophone Asia or North America).  NB:  The Latin American content is more than 25% and should thus qualify for certificate or concentration credit.  The course is primarily intended for students who have completed an advanced language sequence and are ready to initiate studies of conventional literature, and of other writings on the life and cultures of the Lusophone world. There will be four principal objectives: 1) to introduce students to fundamental concepts of literary study (e.g. genre, epochal style) and textual analysis; 2) to familiarize students with the principal periods of the history of literature in Portugal and Brazil, which will be studied in greater detail in more advanced courses; 3) to appreciate Portugal's major writers (Camões, Queiroz, Pessoa, Saramago), as well as select Brazilian and African writers, in national and international contexts; and 4) to compare the development of literature in Portugal with that of Brazil. The course also strives to improve language skills through reading, writing and directed discussion.

 

Grading: Two exams 40%; three writing assignments (an annotated bibliography, a report on a critical source, and an interpretation of a work) 45%; and class performance, including attendance 15%.  One must achieve excellent in each category to get an overall A, good in all for overall B, etc.  Expectations/evaluation may vary according to the background / previous experience of the student.
