Course description and Objectives:

This course examines interrelations of music (primarily popular vocal varieties) and literature (fiction and poetry) in Brazil, from the latter nineteenth century to the turn of the twenty-first century. A fundamental angle of analysis will be the varied functionality of depictions of sound events, composition, performance and song text in short stories and novels, a second will be the conceptualization of song lyrics as a branch of poetry. Complementary literary journalism with musical interest will also be read. Works of literature to be considered represent different epochs of literary history—realism, modernism, post-modernism—and the course will seek to determine what similarities and disparities exist among them with respect to the utilization of musical phenomena. Poet-songwriters will be examined at length as performing artists who may spark literary interest through publication or through artfully complex verbal elaborations in the context of music.

 

Required Work  and Grading:

Class performance, i.e. faithful attendance, evidence of preparedness, and active participation, including assigned presentations = 20%; two short exams = 20%; two mid-size papers (7-8 pp.), on fiction (short stories or novel) and/or poetry of song and/or criticism-theory-method = 60%.  Instructions to follow in class and by email.  NB: excellent score necessary in all three categories to merit an A grade, good in both for a B grade, etc..  Scale: A = 93-99.9, A- = 90-92.9; B+ = 87-89.9, B = 83-86.9, B- = 80-82.9; C+ = 77-79.9, C = 73-76.9, C- = 70-72.9; D+ = 67-69.9, D = 63-66.9; D- = 60-62.9. Standard UF Academic Honesty Policy will be enforced.
