(INTERMEDIATE) PORTUGUESE COMPOSITION AND CONVERSATION

Course objectives:  This is a semi-intensive intermediate course designed for students who have completed an introductory sequence (POR 1130-1131, POR 3010, or the equivalent); more advanced students can be accommodated as well.  The primary aim is to develop and enhance students' written and spoken command of the language, with attention to review and advancement of grammar as well as expansion of vocabulary.  Concurrent goals are to achieve further cultural understanding through readings and discussion, as well as to explore relevant resources in Internet domains e.g. .br  (Brasil) , .pt  (Portugal).  All are encouraged to consider study abroad, especially the UFIC summer-B language + culture program in Rio de Janeiro, sponsored by a Florida-Georgetown Consortium in respective Centers for Latin American Studies.

 

Grading:  3 exams (43%); 7 compositions (42%); class assignments and performance, including attendance, and participation (15%). Excellent needed in all three areas to achieve "A" grade.  Add PLUS MINUS info given in class. / Specific instructions on compositions follow in class.  This class welcomes students who are low- to high-intermediates, therefore grades necessarily factor in their incoming levels.  NB: this class is not designed for heritage speakers nor those beyond high intermediate; admission in these cases is by special permission / arrangement.
