Course objectives:

This is a new course designed to complement the general introduction to Luso-Brazilian Civilization  POR 3500, which focuses more on historical foundations of cultural formations in Portugal,  Brazil, and Lusophone Africa.  The present course concentrates on expressive behaviors of the modern period, from the turn of the twentieth century to the present.  Primary manifestations and themes to be considered include folklife, the transition from rural to urban culture, electronic media (radio-film-television), performance arts, especially popular music, forms of national identity, and governmental institutions.  A concurrent aim is to continue to develop and enhance the written and spoken command of the language of students coming from intermediate classes.  As one pursues cultural understanding through readings and discussion, it is useful  to explore relevant internet domain resources (esp .br).

Grading:

2 exams (40%); 4 short papers (40%); daily assignments, a presentation, and class performance, including attendance, and participation (20%). Excellent needed in all three areas to achieve "A" grade.

Specific instructions on papers follow in class.
