You are in the middle of the desert with a truck and 10 barrels full of gas, each barrel holding 50 gallons. Your truck has a 10 gallon tank which is initially empty. The truck can travel 10 miles per gallon regardless of load, and can carry five barrels in the back. You may pour gas from the barrels to the tank and may leave barrels in the desert and come back for them later. How far from the point of origin can you travel with the truck? You are a cook in a remote area with no clocks or other way of keeping time other than a four minute hourglass and a seven minute hourglass. You do have a stove however with water in a pot already boiling. Somebody asks you for a nine-minute egg, and you know this person is a perfectionist and will be able to tell if you undercook or overcook the eggs by even a few seconds. What is the least amount of time it will take to prepare the egg? An urn has five white balls and five black balls. Four balls are selected at random and placed in a second urn. Two balls are then selected from the second urn and they are both white? What is the probability that the other two in the second urn are white also? Four people need to cross a bridge at night. The bridge is only strong enough to hold at most two people at once. Because it is night a flashlight must be used for all crossings. It takes person A ten minutes to cross, person B five minutes, person C two minutes, and person D one minute. If two cross at the same time they must walk at the slower man's pace. How can you get everyone across in 17 minutes?
