Born in Nagaluru, a small village near Dharmavaram, the silk city of India, famous for its "silk sarees". Currently a Research Assistant at the University of Florida, pursuing my dreams alongside with career in Wireless Networks. I co-founded Edusoftware under the guidance of Prof. Prabhat Ranjan. I am working on Linux and Open Source technologies for enhancing quality of education. Currently a PhD student under Prof. Janise McNair and a part of Wireless and Mobile Laboratory and Small Satellite Design Club at UF. Here is what I am interested in ...

Free Culture and Open Source Software

A free culture is one where all members are free to participate in its transmission and evolution, without artificial limits on who can participate or in what way. The free culture movement seeks to develop this culture by promoting four things: creativity and innovation; communication and free expression; public access to knowledge; and citizens' civil liberties.

Open source describes practices in production and development that promote access to the end product's source materials. Some consider open source a philosophy, others consider it a pragmatic methodology. Before the term open source became widely adopted, developers and producers used a variety of phrases to describe the concept; open source gained hold with the rise of the Internet, and the attendant need for massive retooling of the computing source code. Opening the source code enabled a self-enhancing diversity of production models, communication paths, and interactive communities. Subsequently, a new, three-word phrase "open source software" was born to describe the environment that the new copyright, licensing, domain, and consumer issues created.

GNU/Linux and Ubuntu

Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. More precisely, it refers to four kinds of freedom, for the users of the software:
0. The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
1. The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
2. The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
3. The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

Ubuntu is a computer operating system based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution and is distributed as free and open source software with additional proprietary software available. It is named after the Southern African ethical principle Ubuntu ("humanity towards others"). Ubuntu provides an up-to-date, stable operating system, with a strong focus on usability and ease of installation.

Python

Python is a general-purpose high-level programming language whose design philosophy emphasizes code readability. Python aims to combine "remarkable power with very clear syntax", and its standard library is large and comprehensive. Its use of indentation for block delimiters is unusual among popular programming languages. Python supports multiple programming paradigms, primarily but not limited to object oriented, imperative and, to a lesser extent, functional programming styles. It features a fully dynamic type system and automatic memory management, similar to that of Scheme, Ruby, Perl, and Tcl. Like other dynamic languages, Python is often used as a scripting language, but is also used in a wide range of non-scripting contexts.

Other activities

GatorLUG: The primary purpose of this organization is to help create and develop awareness about Open Source Software and help students learn various Open Source Software like Linux, GIMP, Open Office etc ... Check out our classes at GatorLUG docs.

Gator Ameature Radio Club: The W4DFU amateur radio station was established in 1934 and represents the Gator Nation internationally on a daily basis, through HF, Satellite and Echolink. We are RadioActive Gators!

SSDC: Small Satellite Design Club: The UF Small Satellite Design Club (SSDC) is a student led organization dedicated to the design, fabrication, testing, and flight of small satellite technology. Currently we are working hard towards our first Cubesat mission nicknamed "SwampSat". The SwampSat mission shall demonstrate rapid retargeting and precision pointing (R2P2) maneuvers using miniaturized control moment gyroscopes (CMGs) developed at the University of Florida (UF).

Living in Lab

"I may have done a little bit more living at the lab than most people, because every year or two for some reason or other I'd have no apartment and I would spend a few months living at the lab. .... It was not at all uncommon to find people falling asleep at the lab, again because of their enthusiasm; you stay up as long as you possibly can hacking, because you ...
