My name is Dominique Mitchell and I am from Tampa, Florida. I am a third year student majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders here at the University of Florida. I enjoy working as a Resident Assistant on campus and volunteering at Baby Gator, the daycare on campus. This summer I am employed as a Summer Camp Counselor at the YMCA. As you can probably tell based on my involvement, I really enjoy working with people; more specifically, I love working with children.

Web Page Project

Why do you think a website is "essential" for business of all sizes?

Websites are absolutely essential for businesses of all sizes. The internet has become a major source of information for people all over the world and it is becoming used by more and more people each day. People use the internet for everything from meeting their soulmates to finding recipes or a medical diagnosis. Since the internet has become so popular, it would be wise for all businesses to have a website in order to gain more business.

For small businesses, a website would allow other people to learn more about the types of services that particular company provides. For the larger companies, it is important to have a website in order to act as an information base. Having a website would also eliminate repetitive phone call inquiries.

In addition to being a great information base, companies can use websites to do other things such as list employment opportunities, company history, future goals, public information, a portal for employees to check email while away from the office and much more. Having a company website is a great idea.

Podcast Project

Podcasting in the Business Environment

Podcasting in the business environment is definitely a great idea. The church I attend here in Gainesville allows people to subscribe to podcasts of the pastor’s sermons for each Sunday. This feature allows people who subscribe to be able to listen to these messages on the go or even on their computer at home. If I have to miss church on Sunday, I am still able to watch the sermon when I can. Podcasting is an amazing feature, especially for people who are always on the go.

Not only is podcasting great for watching missed church services, but it is also good for catching up on missed lectures from class or studying. For my Linguistics and Transcription class this past spring, I was able to study for the transcriptions portion of my exams and quizzes on my phone, using the podcast feature. Podcasting definitely makes many things more convenient.

Secure E-mail Project

Secure E-mail in the Business Environment

Secure email is a great enhancement to the current email standard. Using secure email to transmit messages improves privacy in addition to what is already set by email servers. My experience with using secure email has been a breeze. I am now well informed about secure email.

This option allows me to send emails to friends without others being able to read the message that has been transmitted. I love this option. For example, I sent an email to my dad at his job. We exchanged digital signatures, I sent an encrypted email message to him, and he was able to read the encrypted message. When he tried to access the mail on another computer that did not have that digital certificate (signature), the message came up as encrypted and was not readable.

This is a pretty nifty feature. It allows you to keep information private and it keeps the information from reaching the wrong hands. From now on, I am using secure email. I will explain it to all of my friends, show them how to use it, and ask them to spread the word. I am grateful that I am taking this class because I have learned a lot. Additionally, because of learning about secure email, I am able to strengthen my email standards.

Collaborative Computing Project

Collaborative Computing in the Business Environment

Working in groups or teams to complete an assignment on the job is a very common request made by many employers today. Not only does working in groups help the tasks to be completed faster, but it also allows the employers to see how well his/her employees work together and it allows several great ideas to come together. Working together in groups can also enhance leadership skills. Most people either have, or will, work in groups at some time in their lives, but most group work of the past took place face to face. Collaborative computing on the other hand allows for many more possibilities.

Many companies today are expanding nation-wide and have many offices across the country. Because of these expansions, people from different areas have to work together to complete the same tasks. This is where collaborative computing comes in. Collaborative computing still allows these people to work together, however, they are able to conduct business and complete their tasks as well as share their data without ever meeting in person. Collaborative computing skills will definitely be beneficial to many business people today.

In completing this collaborative computing project, I leaned so much about this option in the business environment. At first, my group was really slow to get started, but when we finally got going everything was great. Collaborative computing made it very easy for me to work at my own pace. Similar to people in the business environment, my group member and I had very different schedules. Collaborative computing allowed us to get things accomplished when we had the time. Collaborative computing is definitely a great enhancement to the former idea of group work.

Excel Project

Excel 2003/2007 Skills

Prior to completing this project, I had very little knowledge of MS Excel. I would always type information directly into the cells, rather than use the proper Excel functions that would do the work for me. This project was very interesting and I learned many new skills. A few of the things that I learned include: how to input formulas, how to extract the data that I need for the different columns, as well as how to use pivot table and goal seek. All of these things allowed me to complete my task much faster than I would have if I was typing data into the cells individually.

Being experienced with the Excel program is a very useful skill to posses in everyday life, and especially in the business environment. Simple reports with massive amounts of information can be organized very quickly and easily using Excel. This could be very beneficial to business people everywhere.

Not only is Excel ideal for the business environment, it is also perfect for everyday use at home. Spreadsheets can be used to handle and manage finances. They can also be useful for planning daily or weekly schedules. Excel is an amazing program and I am glad I had the opportunity to learn how to properly use it.

Database project

Microsoft Access Skills

Microsoft Access was one of the most frustrating programs I have ever worked with. It was very confusing compared to Excel and Word. There were so many steps to this project that it made the task very difficult to complete. It was very time consuming, since I had no prior knowledge of this particular program. Though confusing, learning how to use Microsoft Access was very useful, and the knowledge of this program will definitely benefit me in the business environment.

Microsoft Access is a great program for the business environment because it helps to organize the information in a database in a more suitable format that is easy to read and follow. Unlike other applications, Microsoft Access allows different types of files, like reports and tables, to be part of one single file type. This is great because numerous business related projects involve several different areas and aspects of information.

I am really glad that I was able to learn a little bit about databases, but I feel this project only allowed me to see the surface of the ability of Access. Microsoft Access can obviously be used in the classroom, and it can also be used in several other areas. I can use Access, as a Speech/Language Pathologist, to relate certain speech errors to the corresponding demographics. Access can really be an amazing tool in the business environment.
