I am interested in submitting a proposal for the HUB public art competition but I do not have an art degree from UF. Can I apply?
The competition is open to anyone at UF. However, considerable weight will be given to those with a studio art background or practical experience in engineering. Public art must be safe. Those who cannot demonstrate any experience with creating art, 3D objects or landscaping will not be considered. You do not have to have received your qualifications at UF.
The Call to Artists mentions site specific proposals, but gives no details. Can I submit a site specific proposal?
A site specific proposal may be submitted for consideration. Established artists with previous public art experience will be given the most consideration. Your resume should demonstrate that you are able to create what you propose for the amount awarded.
If submitting a site-specific proposal, please provide professional references, a model or scale drawing, a written description of work and its intended relationship to the facility, dimensions, medium and method of construction, anticipated timeline (must be installed by August 25, 2008), and invoice of expenses.
If you have never been awarded a site specific commission, submit images of works of art that already exist. This way the selection committee feels secure that the intended work of art is delivered (and exists).
What are the criteria for the selection of art work for the HUB?
The committee will consider:
Applicants who are associated with UF
Applicants with previous experience in their field
Works of art that are appropriate for the site
Works of art that are structurally safe
Works of art that demonstrate artistic and/or theoretical value
The address in the call to artists is a p.o. box. where can I hand deliver my proposal?
Proposals may be hand delivered to the International Center located on the first floor of the HUB.
If I receive the commission, how will I be paid?
The selected artist, if not already a U.F. employee, must register as a vendor with the University of Florida. A vendor application and Form W-9 must be completed.
Why is there a HUB public art competition?
Typically when a state building is constructed, money is allocated for public art. The HUB was renovated and reopened in 2007, but renovations are not allocated public art funds by the state. That left a need for public art, which is being fulfilled by a gracious donation from the departments within the HUB, the International Center and Office of Academic Technology.
The HUB public art competition is a Museum Studies project in lieu of thesis. Oaklianna Brown, Museum Studies master’s candidate, is coordinating the program and will defend in April after the UF artist is selected.
