Open to current students, faculty, staff and alumni of the University of Florida Gainesville, Florida

Sponsored by the University of Florida International Center (UFIC) and the Office of Academic Technology (AT)

Awards:  Judges will choose one winner from all entries received.  Along with the opportunity to have their artwork on public display in a prominent UF location for one year, the winner will receive $1,000 artist fee to cover costs of shipment and installation, a 16 x 20 framed photograph of their sited work, and recognition in a variety of UF publications, including International News, UFIC’s biannual newsletter.  Entries may be collaborative, but only one artist fee can be given.

Eligibility:

  • Current graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Florida
  • Current faculty and staff of the University of Florida
  • Alumni who have graduated with a degree from the University of Florida

Entries: All media will be considered for this outdoor space.  Sculpture that requires a concrete slab will be considered.  The size of the finished piece can be as large as is practical and safe, but should be no smaller than 3 feet in height or width.  An installation of multiple pieces is acceptable.  The art work should be made of materials that can resist Florida’s climate unless it is intended to decompose (this information should be noted in the proposal).   Because this art work will be available to the public at all times – considerations for public safety are essential.

DeadlineAll entries must be received by March 7, 2008 by 5:00pm at the address below.  Winners will be notified by April 7, 2008.  Installation of winning entry will need to occur by the beginning of the fall 2008 semester (August 25, 2008).

Duration:  The sculpture shall remain on display for a minimum of one year following installation date (unless noted in proposal).

The HUB:  The HUB is a central location on campus with an attractive north facing lawn along Stadium Road.  Recently renovated and reopened in 2007, the HUB is now home to UF’s Center for Academic Technology and the International Center making it truly global in its scope.  The new space boasts energy saving features and was redesigned as a green building.

The HUB was originally conceived by the Russell T. Pancoast and Associates of Miami and built in 1949-50.  In 2004, the building was reviewed for inclusion in the National Historic Register with the period of significance defined as World War II or Early Post-War Period (1940-1956).  The HUB reflects the influence of international modern architecture significant to this era and has been praised for its ability to gesture toward the future while remaining in harmony with the scale and materials of the campus.

Artwork site:  The outdoor green space at the HUB is adjacent to Stadium Road. The lawn is approximately 110’ wide and 70’ deep.  The distance between the two signs (seen in the above picture) is 62’ wide.  The distance between the two trees (seen in the above picture) is 70’ trunk to trunk.  The space between the foliage of the two trees is 28’.

Guidelines:  Selection of winning proposal will be made by committee (representatives form the College of Fine Arts, Academic Technology, and International Center as well as UF students).  Students at UF will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite selection online (plaza.ufl.edu/museulia).  Their selection will constitute one vote on the selection committee.

All entries must be received no later than March 7, 2008 by 5:00pm to:
