The Now that is Night is preserved, i.e., it is treated as what it professes to be, as an entity [Seiendes]; but it proves itself to be, on the contrary, a nonentity [Nichtseiendes]. The Now does indeed preserve itself, but as something that is not Night; equally, it preserves itself in the face of the Day that now is, as something that also is not Day, in other words, as a negative in general.
