Week 1

August 25

  • Please be sure to order your copy of Sound Unbound (the required text) soon. You can purchase it through these links if the bookstore is out of copies:
  • We went over the Syllabus and your first assignment, which is to send me an email. My email address is mccabem@ufl.edu. Please note this does not mean my name is "McCabem" -- my name is Matthew McCabe.
  • I handed out a copy of a short article by Lazlo Moholy-Nagy for you to read for Wednesday. Please come prepard to discuss what he is talking about!

August 27

  • We started by discussing the short article by Lázló Moholy-Nagy that I handed out on Monday.
  • I also handed out the first project assignment sheet. Since the computers in the lab aren't quite finished being set up, please do your background work for Finale Project I for Friday.
  • The class was divided into two groups. I will email you with the group assignments. Remember beginning next week we will meet as a class on Monday, and then Group A will meet Wednesday and Group B will meet Friday.
  • I fixed the date problem on the syllabus. Please download and re-print a copy for yourself (or save paper and just put it on your computer!

August 29

  • We talked a little bit more about using Macintoshes. It's really important that you get comfortable with using the keyboard, especially with Finale. Here's a little article about some of the Mac keyboard functions. We went over some basic system keystrokes.
  • We also pressed on a little bit with using Finale. Remember that in the Finale program in the lab, there are some great quick-start videos that you can watch. I'd highly recommend creating a cheat-sheet for yourself with the keyboard commands, it will make your life a lot easier.
  • Finally, I promised to bring you some more information on turntablism. I talked a bit about what happens when someone is performing "on the decks". Here are a few videos of one of my favorites, DJ Q-Bert. You can watch him in action here, here, and here.
