How it all started
What it has become
Crossfit has shown to be so successful, that even the U.S. and Canadian military have adopted Crossfit principles to their day-to-day training.
But the succes doesn't stop there. Since 2007, Reebok started sponsoring a worldwide competition called The Crossfit Games with the purpose of finding the strongest and fittest person on earth.
The Crossfit Games are now transmitted on ESPN, and millions of viewers around the world watched the competition last year.
ESPN and Reebok signed a 10-year sponsorship of The Crossfit Games, increasing the size of the money awards to $1 million.
The CrossFit Games are divided into three categories:
- The Open: In this stage, more than 26,000 athletes across the globe compete by completing six workouts throughout six weeks and posting their scores online. Athletes can compete as individuals or as a group. The top 60 athletes and the top 30 teams make it to the next round.
- The Regionals: The athletes who qualified to this round compete in one of the 17 regionals, and here they have the first face-to-face competition against one another. Six competitions are held throughout three days, and the best men, women and teams qualify to The CrossFit Games.
- The Games: In this final stage, athletes compete against each other face to face, and whoever prevails wins money and the title of the fittest man, woman or team in the world.
This year, The Open stage took place from Feb. 22 to March 25. Regionals are from April 27 to May 27, and The Games are from July 13-15.
