The Paleo Diet
The Paleo diet is pretty much based on the foods from two different time periods:
- Paleolithic-era foods, which are the ones human beings ate before agriculture and farming. The foods from this time period are the foods that should be eaten when doing the Paleo diet. These foods are known as the "in" foods.
- Neolithic-era foods, which are the ones human beings have been eating since agriculture and farming were invented. These foods are known as the "out" foods.
In this diet, the amount of each "in" food isn't specific. People are allowed to eat more of one "in" food than others as much as they want, as long as the food he/she is eating is in the "in" category.
Let's talk about food!
- Meats: This category is the most important one in the Paleo diet. Bone marrow and organ meat are allowed, but processed meats aren't. Examples of acceptable foods in this category include fish, shellfish, eggs, steak and chicken.
- Veggies: The second most important component of the diet; however, be aware that some vegetables, such ar green beans, peas, potatoes and starchy tubers aren't allowed.
- Fruits: Despite the fact that fruits are healthy, the Paleo diet limits the consumption of high-sugar fruits and juices.
- Nuts and seeds: Allowed only if eaten raw, and these should be limited to four ounces per day.
- Oils: The only ones allowed are those from fruits and tree nuts, such as avocado, coconut, walnut and macadamia.
- Beverages: It's simple. Anything that is not water should be drunk in moderation, specially coffee, soda and alcohol.
