Kelly Slater: The surfing posterboy

Surfing has become a world-renowned professional sport that has mesmerized many fans, both surfers and non-surfers alike. Competitions are constantly held in locations such as Baja, California, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, Faaone, Tahiti, Maui, Hawaii, all over Australia and in many locations in France. Many have worked hard to gain the desired respect and recognition by the surfing community, but one man continues to stand out to this day.
Kelly Slater is without a doubt the poster boy of surfing. He’s been competing for a decade on the Association of Surfing Professional international circuit. Slater has been declared surfing world champion 6 unparalleled times. Therefore, Kelly Slater is regarded as the greatest surfer of all time. His exceptional skill has not only contributed to his self-esteem and fame, but he’s also managed to pocket over three-quarters of a million dollars in prize money and over a million dollars in sponsorships, endorsements, and bonuses.
Kelly grew up in Cocoa Beach, Florida, where he spent every day on the beach and took up surfing. It first started out as a hobby that made him feel good about himself and helped take his mind off of his father’s drinking problem and his parents’ divorce. Soon his dedication towards this hobby landed Kelly a reputation as one of the best surfers around and, even as a teenager, he started appearing in magazines and had an agent. After 22 years of watching others surf and perfecting his own style, Kelly has no doubt earned himself the title of master of the wave. He has now taken a break from participating in competitions and concentrates on riding the most challenging waves at his own whim.
