History of Surfing

According to some pieces of evidence, such as petroglyphs carved into the lava rocks of the Hawaiian landscape, surfing may have been around since 1500 A.D. However, the first Westernized recordings of the sport were taken by Captain King in March 1779, when the natives of Hawaii would amuse themselves during stormy weather by going out into the water with their long boards and ride the waves. This sport was part of the Kapu system of laws, which separated royalty from the commoners as a higher power. Surfing was a way to maintain the royal families’ command over the common people by demonstrating strength, endurance, and dexterity.
