I was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 3, 1981. A year later my family moved to Omaha, Nebraska.
I lived there for about 5 years, and then my dad got a job offer he couldn’t refuse in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
He and my mom decided it would be a good idea to raise us back there so that it would instill some of our Arabic culture in us.
I grew up in a westernized community sponsored by Aramco, the international petroleum company that possesses the world’s largest oil reserves.
I quickly adopted the life style of the ‘Aramco brat’, living in a place that is almost like a mini-utopia.
I went to American schools inside my community and then, after completing the 9th grade,
I did what everyone my age in Aramco had to do since the only schools in Saudi Arabia that offered
beyond the 9th grade level were outside of my community and had an Arab curriculum.
I went to boarding school. I chose Bahrain School in Manama, Bahrain since it was closer to home
and it wasn’t as preppy as a lot of the boarding schools in the United States seemed to be.
I graduated from there after the 12th grade, and I came to the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida to complete my education.
I still consider the Aramco community in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia my home and I go back there twice a year to visit my parents and old friends.
