Initial Symptoms (they are nonspecific)
→Fever
→Diarrhea
→Loss of appetite
→Poor weight gain
→Peevishness
→Tachypnea (abnormally fast breathing)
Specific Symptoms
→ Irritability
→Pain and tenderness of the legs
→Pseudoparalysis (inhibition of
movement because of pain)
→Swelling of the long bones
→Hemorrhage
Mortality/Morbidity
→There is sudden death due to
cardiac failure that is reported in infants and adults.
→Predominant morbidity is a result
of hemorrhage into various tissues.
Subperiosteal hemorrhage in the tibia and femur causes excruciating
pain.
Age
→ Scurvy can occur at any age. Infantile scurvy usually occurs when the
infant is aged 6-24 months. It is
uncommon in the neonatal period.
Race
→There is no racial predilection.
Sex
→There is no sexual preponderance.
