Perhaps the two most prominent names in color commentary for college basketball are Dick Vitale and Billy Packer. They are from a similar age group and tier of their profession -- Vitale at ESPN and Packer at CBS.

Vitale, for the most part, is the fan favorite, a celebrity who is often at least as prominent as the games he covers, while Packer is the critical favorite who remains detached. Although Vitale often goes to excess in drawing attention to himself, there is one trait he possesses that trumps any shortcomings.
