Opp, Alabama is named after Henry Opp who was a lawyer for L&N Railroad in Andalusia, Alabama. Henry was battling a case in the early 1900's where he was trying to establish a railroad line to run through Covington County (Opp being part of this county). He won the case which provided a good "turning route" place for trains to pass through. In appreciation for this technological advancement, the little town decided to name itself after Henry Opp, giving it the name of Opp, Alabama.
One of Opp's major attractions is its well-known state park, Frank Jackson State Park. The park consists of 2,050 acres of lakes, a swimming beach, picnic area, campground and a playground. Just the lakes alone account for over 1,000 acres of the state park. The park has a large campsite which runs at a base price of $15. The park is located just a short distance of about one mile from downtown Opp.
Opp has a population of about 7,000 people and is located near the intersection of US Highway 331 and US highway 84. This is just 20 miles from the Florida state line. Opp is labeled as being in southern Alabama near the Florida Panhandle.
