Britain after 1832
 

The Reform Bill (1832) - was a revolution

- business interests (industrialization) = with the old aristocracy - in the government

Liberal party: the aristocratic Whigs (Reform Bill) merged with the radical industrialists and with a few Liberal Tories
Conservative party: the main body of the Tories, a few old Whigs

LP and CP altered in power (1832 - First World War): the classic period of Liberal-Conservative two party system

1833: slavery was abolished in the British Empire
1834: new Poor Law - adopted
1835: Municipal Corporations Act - modernized the local government - brought uniform electoral and administrative machinery
1836: House of Commons - allowed the newspapers to report how its members voted
          ecclesiastical commission reviewed the affairs of the
Church of England (financial, administrative and inequalities in the income for clergy)

Tories - counteroffensive into the strongholds of the liberal manufacturing class (factories and mines)

T: champions of the industrial workers

1833: Factory Act (no children under 9 in the textile mills)
1842: another Act - for the coal mines (employment underground of women and girls, and of boys under 10 - forbidden)
1847: the Ten Hours Act: limited labor of women and children to 10 hours (industrial establishments)

The Whig - liberal - radical:

1838: Anti-Corn League
 

* Objections to the Corn Laws :

- wage earners - the tariff on grain imports kept up the price of food
- industrial employers: C.L. kept up the wages and cost of production in England (export trade - was affected)

* Defenders of the Corn Laws:

- protection of agriculture - necessary to maintain the natural aristocracy
- Britain - should have a balanced economy (industry/farming)

The Anti-Corn Law League (Manchester) - operated like a modern political party ( had money- from donations, sent lecturers on tour, used the newspapers, pamphlets and educational books)

1846: the Corn Laws were repealed

==>> 1846 stands as a symbol of the change, reaffirmed the revolutionary consequences of the Reform Bill ==>>Industry was now a governing element in the country.
