Optimal Technique

As for other inhalers, there are several factors that may affect the SVN’s performance.  Operate the SVN according to the following steps for better performance.

  1. Before the use, assess the patient for conditions and needs (clinical signs and symptoms, breath sounds, peak flow, %FEV1)
  2. Select whether mask or mouthpiece delivery should be used for the patient (noseclips may be needed with mouthpiece)
  3. If indicated, use a conserving system (thumbport or reservoir)
  4. Fill the nebulizer with the medicine with volume ≥ 4 ml
  5. Set the gas flow rate to the nebulizer (6 to 8 L/min)
  6. Coach the patient to breathe slowly through the mouth at normal tidal volume
  7. Periodically tap the nebulizer. This can minimize residual volume
  8. Continue treatment until no aerosol is produced
  9. Rinse the nebulizer with sterile water and run dry
  10. Assess outcome (e.g. change in peak flow, %FEV1)
