:: Section 5
Optimal Technique
As for other inhalers, there are several factors that may affect the SVN’s performance. Operate the SVN according to the following steps for better performance.
- Before the use, assess the patient for conditions and needs (clinical signs and symptoms, breath sounds, peak flow, %FEV1)
- Select whether mask or mouthpiece delivery should be used for the patient (noseclips may be needed with mouthpiece)
- If indicated, use a conserving system (thumbport or reservoir)
- Fill the nebulizer with the medicine with volume ≥ 4 ml
- Set the gas flow rate to the nebulizer (6 to 8 L/min)
- Coach the patient to breathe slowly through the mouth at normal tidal volume
- Periodically tap the nebulizer. This can minimize residual volume
- Continue treatment until no aerosol is produced
- Rinse the nebulizer with sterile water and run dry
- Assess outcome (e.g. change in peak flow, %FEV1)
