The Halt
This horse is at the halt while its rider is saluting the judges.
The halt is usually completed at the beginning or the end of a dressage ride so the rider may salute the judges. In a correct halt, the weight of the horse should be distributed evenly on all four legs and attentive of potential movement. All feet should be square and even, as if they formed a rectangle.
Most people, including riders, underestimate the difficulty in this; thus, it is often not completed well. The halt is usually followed with four to six seconds of a standstill, where the horse should not move at all, including the shifting its weight on its legs.
