Guinea possesses major mineral, hydropower, and agricultural resources, yet remains an underdeveloped nation. The potential exists for Guinea to obtain wealth by taking advantage of its valuable resources, but the economy has become over-dependent on bauxite reserves and foreign aide. There has been some GDP growth since the early 1990’s, but not significant enough to stop worrying. It seems improper management of Guinea’s trade systems has contributed to its economic standstill. Only a few are benefiting greatly from its natural mining resources. Food imports have more than doubled in the early 1990’s ( Arulpragasam, 4) and one must wonder if more should be done to help encourage domestic agricultural trade.
