The Atlanta Falcons entered the league in 1966. Atlanta was the NFL's 15th franchise. Atlanta held a contest to name the new team. After many entries were looked over, the Falcon was the most popular.

The team's first home uniforms were black with white numbers and red trim at home with a white Falcon crest on the sleeves. The helmet was red with a black Falcon crest logo trimmed in white.

In 1971 the franchise decided to switch to a red jersey. For about two decades they wore red jerseys with a matching red helmet. In 1990 the organization reversed the color pattern and went with a black helmet and black jerseys. In 1999 the appeared in Super Bowl wearing the black helmet on black jersey combination. In just a couple of years the Atlanta Falcon's uniform would be completely different.

In 2003 the Falcons made their first ever logo change. The new Falcon logo looks similar, but the Falcon has a swifter, “in flight” look. The jerseys also made significant changes.

In 2003 the team introduced a new black jersey for home games and an alternate red jersey. The jerseys have black and/or red piping down the side that tie into the matching pants. In 2004 the red alternate jersey became the primary home jersey.
