History of Hague

Virtual Tour

The Florida Southern Railroad, building a line from Gainesville to Newnansville, announced in July of 1883 that it was naming a new town north of Gainesville, Hague. This apparently honored Archelaus Hague, who was later named postmaster of Hague in November of 1883. With rail service the town grew, boasting of a gristmill, cotton gin, two saw mills, general stores, and a new school by the end of 1890. Thomas Haile has also planted an orange grove that year. Today Hague is an agricultural center and the home of a large General Electric manufacturing plant.
